MCEDV Statement re: Sexual Assault Allegations Against Judge Brett Kavanaugh

Too often, the possibility that a powerful figure has committed sexual assault or domestic abuse is considered less important than the position that individual holds and the value they bring to their position. This dynamic has for centuries kept victims isolated and silent, resulting in the punishment of those who do speak out. We offer our support, compassion, and empathy to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

MCEDV is in solidarity with our partners in the movements to end sexual and domestic violence in asking the Senate to pursue a thorough, nonpartisan, and trauma-informed investigation of the alleged assault by Judge Brett Kavanaugh. We emphasize that a single hearing without a prior substantive investigation cannot accomplish the goal of understanding these allegations. For all concerned, there should be a pause in the nomination process of Judge Brett Kavanaugh while a thorough investigation is conducted.

We have a collective duty as a society to prioritize truth-seeking, even when it is inconvenient for our systems and institutions. It is imperative if we mean it when we say that we are committed to supporting survivors and holding to account those who act abusively. The Senate has an opportunity to chart a better path and treat these credible allegations with the thoughtfulness and gravity they warrant. We join our voices to countless others across the nation, demanding they do just that.
